Why you're doing more harm than good

Tough Love from Jillian - The Newsletter

This is probably something you know: When you’re pushing your body too hard in the gym, you’re not giving your body adequate time to rest and repair itself.

That said, anything can be done for a short period of time when done safely (think about sports seasons or training for a competition). But, over time, if you're over training your body will start to break down. You will experience adrenal fatigue, which will throw off your natural hormones and body cadence. The effect is a lack of performance, energy, and vitality as well as changes in your sleep, mood, appetite. It's doing more harm than good.

It's simple and obvious: the body needs time to recover.

I've loved the gym for 20 years now. I've had some rocky seasons in my relationship with the gym, but through experience, education, and some really amazing people along the way speaking into my life and my habits, I've created a zen with body and with food. I know my limits like the back of my hand and I can listen to my body as easily as I can tie my shoe.

I know that so many people are working towards this kind of ease in their health journey and I want to be a source of encouragement for you. I was thinking about how easy health, nutrition, and movement are for me and I started to realize...I don't have that kind of ease in managing my stress.

Which is odd because I can FEEL the stress in my body. I just haven't been able to consistently tie my body's responses to stress. It's almost like I ignore the stress for fear of being weak. Just being honest here...

Over the last few months, I've been spending a LOT of time learning about stress. I'm learning the importance of turning off and delegating new things that I didn't even realize were causing me stress.

I'm doing more harm than good by simply trying to manage my stress. Instead, I am learning to release it and prevent it. While I've got a handle on my health and fitness, I'm always learning and growing somewhere in my life.

Can you relate to that? There's probably something in your life that you're allowing to do more harm than good. Think on that...

Yours,

Jillian
