Let's set this straight before we dive in: biblical faith, faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). You don't need much. In one of Jesus' sermons, he tells us that faith as small as a mustard seed will move mountains (Matthew 17:20). How? Faith harnesses God's power. So why then does James (James 2:26) say that faith without works is dead? James is affirming that our actions are the byproduct of faith. Our actions do not justify us or make us righteous before God. Our actions are also not the way to salvation (see Romans 10:9-10). Our actions are simply the fruit that grows when we're obedient to God’s commands and when we choose, by free will, to be transformed by His grace. It's funny...I spent many years not eating fruit. I was afraid of the sugar. I knew it was full of good vitamins, minerals, and fiber, but I still wouldn't eat it. This is a good analogy to my relationship with God at that time in my life. I believed in God, but I did not know Him nor did I have a personal relationship with Him. When I choose to grow in relationship with Him, he started pruning me. Just like any good gardener would to their plants that will eventually bear fruit. The process was equally painful, joyful, and life-altering. God knows we're not perfect. Our sin is why he sent Jesus to save it - he was and is our only hope. Take what faith you have right now, no matter how little or big, and allow God to use it to prune your life. Ask him how he wants you to spend his time. I promise you it will start with being kinder to others, serving others, and talking to and about Jesus. Take action on what He is telling you and watch your life bear fruit. Maybe this is happening to you right now... I want to celebrate with you!
